Lea was born in lush Hana, Maui. Her mother was a gorgeous chow, and her father a striking golden retriever. They came together to produce the most beautiful puppy imaginable ... she had her father's floppy ears, her mother's red fur coat and brown eyes, and a combination of their muzzles and tongues (pink with purple spots).
Right before my 12th birthday, I announced to my parents that it was time to get a dog. Shortly thereafter, we went canine shopping and found the radiant, unsurpassable Lea at our last stop. As we held our warm ball of fur for the first time, we knew that destiny had brought us together. Throughout the years, Lea has been the most wonderful dog anyone could ask for. She is loving, sweet and mild-mannered (except during dinnertime). Yet, she is far from blas or docile. She also has attitude. She can be sassy (following a bath), or confident (after she has been combed), or sensitive/emotional (if she is shown too much love). Lea loves Thanksgiving and Christmas (or maybe just the leftovers), long walks on the beach, car rides, and being scratched behind her ears and rubbed on her belly. Lea will listen to your problems and let you know that everything will be alright. To this day, at the age of 84, Lea maintains her smashing charm. She still jumps fences and hunts mice. She still poses for the camera like a world-class supermodel. She still arouses awe in everyone fortunate enough to cross her path.
Although Lea may not be with us much longer, we will forever treasure her as the most special dog in the universe. "Love" is an inadequate word to describe what we will always feel for our shining star.
