My family and I adopted Elka from an animal shelter to accompany our other dog, Duncan. Her submissive behavior allowed her to get along with many dogs, and her playful attitude had a way of making people laugh. Her ears were velvet soft, her eyes were beautifully outlined as though she were wearing eyeliner (but I assure you, she wasn't!), and her adorable disposition made her irresistible. With lanky legs and a long torso, she'd bound around our back yard in a very deer-like fashion. She loved to get out on her daily walks and play. She wagged her tail in big, awkward circles, a cute addition to her personality. Her bark, however, was misleading for it was as deep as a Great Dane's and made her sound so uncharacteristically intimidating. :)
Still not quite out of her puppyhood, Elka was, admittedly, pretty naughty. She enjoyed digging holes in the backyard, dragging around her bed, stealing clothes out of the laundry basket, and chewing up plants. Seeing this, we kept a wire fence around our garden so as to hopefully keep her out. It didn't. Elka could be observed from inside the house, effortlessly leaping over our barricade and trampling our tomato plants as though it served as the most fun she's ever had. This behavior, though a bit troublesome, failed to make Elka any less lovable.
I am very sad to say that after only two years of owning her, Elka was bit by a rattlesnake and died before we were able to get help. But even in her last moments of awareness, she was giving us her darling doggy grin and thumping her tail on the ground as though nothing were wrong. It comforts me, knowing that she was happy with us despite how short of a time we had with her. I am positive in saying that she was the sweetest, most loving dog I've ever known and I will always remember her.
