She is getting older and losing her sight - but remains a constant companion and is very affectionate.
Bella is over 14 years old. She is a standard poodle on the petite side (35 pounds). Beth met her at a work party along with her adorable brother.
It was a little out of the ordinary that one of the other guests and his wife brought their two puppies to the party, but the hostess didn't seem to mind. I was not looking for a dog and never pictured myself with a poodle, but the puppies were adorable and as it turned out the puppy parents had decided they couldn't keep them both. The male was named Tristan and the female had not yet been given a name. After the party I couldn't get the puppy out of my mind. I was in love, and the rest is history…
I had no idea what to expect with a poodle. I had a history with Labradors, Golden Retrievers and Beagles. I thought they were prissy dogs. While she may not like to get dirty and I never had to worry about her digging in my garden, she's athletic and a fine hunter. She caught a chipmunk and swallowed it whole at three months old.
She speaks poodle and many, many words in the English. She has tried to teach us poodle, but we are not as fluent in poodle as she is in English. Sometimes it's not clear she knows she is a dog. Bella with her favorite play toy "Eggie" - a small squeeky ball that she loves to fetch, then play keepaway and carry it around and cradle like it's a baby.
She is gentle, playful and loves her routines, yet she is still capable of adapting to new situations, even at her age. She "heels" like a show dog, knows "shake", "sit" and "stay", "up" and " down". Often, however she considers "come" merely a suggestion. LOL!
She never leaves my side and is full of kisses. She is the most affectionate dog I have ever had. Bella has been the dog love of my life.
Bella is ready for cooler weather so she can get back on the pickleball court.
