Patches is a rescue cockapoo who was stepped on by a horse when I first got him. I knew it would be expensive, but I made the decision to try to save the leg and and have the surgery to pin the bone. THREE times I told the vet I didn't think the cast fit properly and after a few week he was becoming sick so I took him in. The x-ray showed that the bone had healed, but the cast cut off circulation to the foot and his leg ended up needing to be amputated.
Patches has been a three-legged wonder dog ever since for almost five years now. He is about 5 or 6 years old, we do not know for sure. He doesn't know he is "handicapped." In fact everyone who sees him can't believe how well he runs. He out runs the yellow lab. My yellow lab is his protector, though, chasing off coyotes, once when they actually had Patches on the ground, flipped upside down and had scratched his belly!
Patches is a survivor, and makes me smile every day!
