Rosie the Pitbull mix, the Dog of the Day
Name: Rosie
Age: One year old
Gender: Female Breed: Pitbull Mix
Home: Pearland, Texas, USA

Right before I went for a run one day, somebody on our neighborhood Facebook page posted that there was a dog near my neighborhood and they posted a picture of a dog laying near a brick wall ... they said the dog looked "skinny."

So I packed up some bread and chicken for the dog, only planning to give her some food. What I saw was awful, her ribs were sticking out and you could see every vertebrate. She was too weak to stand. She gratefully accepted the chicken and bread, and eventually let me stroke her head without shaking. Half of her face was a giant, swollen hematoma and she was also covered with bite marks all over her face. She looked like she was a year old or less, and like she has been used as a "bait dog." I tried a few times to help her stand and she couldn't. The last time, she closed her eyes and sighed. I petted her head some more, and I started crying.

A very nice guy stopped by and we started talking. He offered to take her to his veterinarian, so I picked her up and carried her a few blocks to his car. I offered to split the bill but he said it was ok. He's a very good man, and he had a gentle voice.

I kept in contact and the couple ended up not being able to keep her. She was so smart, once she was feeling better, she got out of her crate and chewed up some of their furniture. It was either me or the shelter, so we took her in. I named her Rosie.

We haven't looked back. She was house trained in one day and learned how to sit and come in 10 minutes. It took her a few days to become comfortable in our house with our current pets and kids but she's doing great! She is one of the sweetest dogs I know.

It simultaneously warms and breaks my heart when Rosie smiles at me, her eyes filled with trust and love, and her face covered with hundreds of bite mark scars. I love Rosie. She's a brave girl and I'm so impressed that she is so willing to love again after having been so severely abused. She deserves only good in her life now, and we are determined to make it so!
