Warning from the editors, Spike's story has a very sad beginning, it may be difficult for sensitive people to read. For those people, please skip the first paragraph.

Spike's life began in a fighting rink. When he was just a puppy, his owner threw him in the rink, and expected him to fight. Well, he didn't want to fight. He sat there, and did absolutely nothing. So, his owner, believing he was worthless, slit his stomach. Luckily, the man's neighbor decided to take the dog in and nurse him back to health. Once he was healthy, he sold him to a man named Dan, my old neighbor. Dan, though, did nothing to make Spike happy. Spike was tortured by the kids. They would ride him like a horse, fight him, and spray him with the hose that was ice cold. Spike had to share a big bowl of dog food with another dog, but that dog would never let him eat. Spike was always locked away in a bedroom, not let out to use the restroom, or to eat. And what do you think would happen if you leave a dog in a room all day not being let out to do his business? Obviously he would do his business in the bedroom. But, his owner didn't understand that, so he beat him. Either with beer bottles or punching him. We only learned all this history after we got him.

But one day that all changed. The house got raided for drugs. Spike was so scared that he eventually ran off in all the commotion. Later on that day, he showed up at our house. I still remember when he first came here. He ran throughout the house, so energetic. He ran into my room, licking my face, punching on me with his muddy paws. We decided to keep him. He was two years old at that time, so he had a lot to learn. We trained him, and with time and love he was so much better.

Spike acts like he started his life here, like he had completely forgotten his past. He gets along with anything that is living; cats, mice, babies, you name it. He's played tug of war with a baby, and he let the baby win. He's so gentle and friendly. I really have no word to describe him. He's just the best dog ever. He deserves everything good. That's why I think he should be honored. There is no other dog like him in the world, and we love him very, very much.
