We
picked Abbey out at our local dog shelter. She's very lovable and sweet.
She's also a calm-natured dog and was easy to train.
The other day I went to the bank and since it was a cool day I decided to
take Abbey, our Rhodesian Ridgeback/Lab mix with me. She's a nice, calm,
well-behaved dog. I usually take "the boys" (our two labs) with me, but for
some reason I thought I would take Abbey.
I get to the bank and before I leave the car I notice Abbey is in the back
cargo area just sitting there. I go into the bank to make a deposit. I'm the
only one in there and I am back at the car in about three minutes. Abbey is
still sitting calmly in the cargo area.
I sit in the car and grab for my seat belt. But wait! There is no seat belt
hanging there! I said "What the heck?" I look down by the pedals and there is
the seatbelt. I look at one end of the seatbelt and it looked like someone
cut it with a pair of scissors. I find the other end and it's cut the same
way, plain and cleanly cut through with no ragged edges. But this second end
of the belt looked slightly different. It was covered with dog slobber. That
darned dog ate through the seatbelt! I don't know how she did it so fast!
So I drove home and called the car dealer for a price on the part and they
quote me $528.00 for the seatbelt and retractor alone. I asked why I can't
just buy the seatbelt and they said the belt and retractor are sold as a one
piece unit because the retractor has a gas charge built into it. Crap,I thought.
I know you should never reuse a seatbelt after an accident because they
stretch out and could fail in another accident so that rules it out. Last
spring I had to put new seatbelts in our '70 VW bug because the front
passenger shoulder belt failed under similar circumstances. But it was only
$70. for both the passenger and drivers side three point belt. I thought those
belts failed because they were 43 years old.
It looks like I have a seat belt eater on my hands! You'd never know it but
she was the only one in the car that day!
