My
mom and stepdad originally got Seneca when I was nine years old. She was the
first dog that we had ever had, and she was the cutest boxer-pitt anywhere!
She was free, in a sense that there was no initial cost of buying her- she
came from a family friend's dog, Shyanne. She was not free, as she had quite
a few operations in her first few months with us.
She was born with a hole in her intestinal tract, which had to have mesh
stapled inside of her, which luckily didn't cause any more problems. Then she
ate carpet; she had decided the pick at one small spot and pull up strings of
carpet and eat them. The ball of string was about the size of a baseball.
When she decided that she couldn't poop it out, she ate a poinsettia plant to
try and make herself throw up. Because she was in and out of the emergency
room for a few more reasons, we joked with the vet about installing a zipper
on her stomach.
As she grew up, Seneca would always sleep in my room and up on my bed with
me. That just became the normal behavior at night time, years after years of
it. When I turned eighteen (Seneca was nine at this point) and moved out for college,
my mom had kept my room the way it was for when I came home and visited.
While I was gone, Seneca still came into my room and slept there, and it was
always a joy to be back in my bed with her next to me.
Of course, as years pass, she got a bit older, and if she couldn't get up on
the bed by herself, she was still able to come and sleep next to the bed with
me. One Friday, Seneca had stopped eating and started loafing around a lot
more- she knew that her time had come and told us, so my mom texted me and
told me that I should come down and see her. Sunday evening, I was there and
had decided that I was going to sleep next to her at her bed, because we were
going to call a mobile vet for her to pass in the morning.
Seneca Lee should be the honored because she has been the best friend that
any young boy could have asked for. When something was wrong, she was
nurse-dog, right there to help. She would find dead animals and give them to
us as presents... after rolling around on them, of course. She was prey
oriented with smaller animals, but in 13.5 years, she never hurt anyone. I
know everyone says this about their dog, but Seneca was the sweetest and most
kind-hearted soul I have ever met.
