Ellie
is a rescue-pup; we got her two years ago from Harper's Ferry Rescue.
She is a Coonhound, Husky, Yellow Lab, German Shepherd mix. When we went
down to Virginia to meet her for the first time, she was so nervous that
she was shaking like a leaf (she had been abused as a puppy and was
terrified of new humans). I held her in my arms (she was approximately
60 pounds and medium-sized at that point), and she bit me on the thumb out of
nervousness (though I wasn't really bothered by it--I've had much worse
from horses). She pulled strongly on the leash and they told us that we
could give her back if we wanted, and admitted that they were having
difficulty placing her because of her nervousness and semi-fear of humans,
her age (she was one and didn't look like the stereotypical "cute puppy"
anymore), as well as her excitability.
I understand completely how it feels to not be wanted by anyone and I told
them NO, that I wanted her, and she's been my wonderful dog ever since.
She's a lot less nervous and more at home now--though always very excited,
especially when she does her 200-some [not exaggerating] laps around our
fenced-n back yard). Her name remains "Ellie" but I also call her
"Beautiful" and it seems to make her smile. She still has some nervous
habits and still hates male figures (we think it has something to do with
her puppy years), but she's grown into a healthy, loving, and loyal dog who
loves to go on very long walks and strangely has no fear of deer (which is
great, because when she sees a deer, she wants nothing more than to chase
it!). Oh and when she finds a smell she likes, she goes down and slides on
her belly, and sticks her butt in the air, tail wagging.
