Harvey
is our first baby, but we knew for a long time that we wanted an
Australian Shepherd. We had heard they were brilliant dogs who aim to please
their owner, which would be a perfect match for our active family. We met our
bouncing boy first at five weeks and decided we couldn't be without him. He was
a lot smaller than all the other puppies in his litter, we were warned that
he didn't like loud noises and he was a little shy at first, but we could not
resist his floppy ears and his big brown eyes.
As soon as Harvey was comfortable in the house, we started working on
training him. Within one week of having him he was able to sit, stay, shake a
paw and successfully fetch. It's true, this breed aims to please. When we
told him how smart he was and how good he was doing, he only tried harder. We
named him Harvey Specter after one of our favorite TV show characters from
'Suits'. Harvey is a brilliant (handsome) lawyer who continues to prove
people that he is the best at what he does. It's very fitting for our
incredible little dog who loves to show off and continue to learn.
We are hoping to get Harvey enrolled in agility classes before Christmas, he
has shown skill in all the basics and we would love to see him excel. As
well, he's a master at giving handshakes and high fives. He loves to dance,
especially to Christmas music (but only if you sing/dance along too). He
communicates with us quite often too, whining, talking, and very quick to
thank you with a big sloppy kiss. That's another thing about Harvey, he's a
huge suck. He loves cuddling on the couch, in our bed wrapped in a blanket,
on the cold ceramic tile when its far too hot to even consider snuggling.
His fur is still fluffy like a new puppy. One day at the park a lady asked if
she could pet Harvey and squealed "oohhhhh, it's like petting a cloud!". He
has huge puffs of fluff behind his ears, on his neck and his chest. If you
ever have a bad day just give us a call to schedule an appointment to bury
your face in our dog's soft fur (just kidding, we're selfishly keeping
snuggles to ourselves).
Harvey is ticklish on his feet, which makes it hard to clip his nails. But
its a lot of fun to tease him by pretending you're going to grab his feet. He
gets excited and jumps around making small barking noises and smiling. We
introduced Harvey to swimming this previous summer. He took to it right away,
but panics when he starts to sink. He's not the most buoyant breed, and does
not have webbed paws for treading water with ease. So we bought Harvey his
very own life jacket. Now, we can't get Harvey out of the water to go home.
He loves fetching his water toy, and treading along at the beach.
We are a younger couple, living alone for the first time together, and having
a puppy was always a must for both of us. We got much more than a companion,
we have our first child. Harvey has made us so happy, and has made us a
family. We like to refer to ourselves as part of the "secret dog owners
society". Dog people are some of the best people we've ever come across, and
its been a blast raising our first dog. Now- When can we get another puppy?
