Ralph,
a Parsons Russell, saved my husband Ray's life. While picking
cucumbers, Ralph jumped between Ray's hand and the cucumber to take the full
bite of a venomous Cottonmouth Moccasin. Ralph's body swelled three times his
normal size and died once during the ordeal. I jumped on him and started him
breathing again with my human oxygen and CPR.
Monday morning, after a very, very painful weekend for Ralph, we were able to
find a Veterinarian who cared and went out of her way by calling the NC
Veterinary School of Medicine. She sent one of her staff to the grocery store
and brought back two chickens, which she boiled, "Protein, protein" she would
state as she finally had him eating. After a week of glucose, transfusions,
chicken and the Vet's ham sandwich slices, Ralph raised his leg on the Lab
trash can. He was wobbly but he was on his way to living. You talk about an
ecstatic crew and Doctor and, of course, us and Ralph. After four vets
recommended putting down, a relentless Papa Ray said, "He saved my life and
now I save his" and he did.
We got Ralph when he was literally placed in our fenced-in yard one day. He
was starved, B.B. shot, had a head wound, and was generally poor off. He told
me "I love you" from across the yard, and that was it, he became our dog. He
was close to five to seven years old at the time, was very wild and would
howl loudly and continuously when left. Gradually, with a lot of leaving him;
starting with short to longer length of times, he has become to terms with his
separation anxiety.
He, now, is calm, lovable and very gentle. We were even surprised when he
out-did our Jack Russell Gracie Lou with tricks. His coat is wiry and I
scissor cut it while he patiently stands there for me. He sleeps in the big
bed with my husband, while Gracie and I sleep in our big, mechanical bed.
Ralph talks and does a variety of tricks - he says his prayers, sits, speaks,
stays, etc. I don't know his age for sure, but probably over nine years old.
He loves to go to breakfast each morning with my husband. He likes to garden
with Ray and he protects his baby sister Gracie by going out the flap, at
night, with her. He has his treat after, and she has hers. They spend a lot
of time stealing treats from each other. We live near the Atlantic Ocean on a
Barrier Island. We all love Ralph very, very much.
