Edgar
is a retired therapy dog who visited patients in the facilities in our
community and read with kids in the 4th grade. He is the sweetest little man,
just ask all of his human friends. Edgar can't hear you but he loves you. He
enjoys the outdoors and hanging with his pack of six dachshunds. Edgar loves
cats and has four that he plays with.
Say Hi to Edgar Wiener! If you do you should use American Sign Language (ASL)
as he is a deaf dog. Edgar was named for named for the albino rock star of
days gone by.
Edgar Wiener was rescued at 8 months old when I was walking my dog Shasta and
a lady can running up and said "you need to rescue this white, wiener dog who
is so sweet and deaf". The lady who had Edgar had broken her hip and couldn't
care for him anymore and was going to return him to the breeder (puppy mill)
and they said they would put him down because he is deaf. He is a double
dapple which happens from breeding dapple to dapple which should not be done,
as they often have many health problems. Double dapples can be blind, deaf,
sight impaired & deaf, and also have liver problems etc. Reputable &
responsible breeders do not breed dapple to dapple.
Well I went home and asked Jeff, "do you want to rescue a white wiener dog?".
We already had three and he said yes. We got in our red, convertible, sports
card and went and picked him up. He never looked back.
Edgar attend several obedience courses and we bought a book to help teach us
ASL and he knows signs, good boy, come, sit, down, potty, beautiful and others.
He tested and became a Pet Partner visiting dog for a few years with Rx: Pets
in Redding, California. He is very visually sensitive so we retired him so he would
not be stressed by the bright lights in some settings. If I had more time I
would work with him again and find just the right spot to visit, maybe with the deaf.
I knew he would be an amazing addition to our pack when on the first day he
was in a deep sleep and I petted him. Before his blue eyes opened his tail
started wagging. Having an deaf dog is truly a blessing.
He is so soft and has so many human friends along with our pack which has
grown to six but includes Dachshunds that don't live with us. Our pack's
names are Chloe, Shasta, Lucky, Coco, Duke, Lily, Shana, Sparky, Mac, Max and
Luca and of course the cats that Edgar loves so much, Charm, AmyG, Pablo and
Felix who he is not as fond of because Felix will swat at him!
Edgar is getting close to 400 followers on Twitter
@EdgarWiener
(way more than I have) and if you Google him there is not another "Edgar Wiener"!
