What makes him special? Very good question, I would say everything.
Balto is the best dog ever (for me). Everybody loves him, people who usually don't like dogs, too. He is a very smart and sensitive guy.
I always wanted a border collie, and I didn't make a mistake choosing this breed. They are just amazing! But I wanted a female not a male. I don't know what made me decide to visit his litter when he was one month. Three males where awailable, and I chose him (or he chose me, I don't really know). Now, I think I can say that were are a team. I don't enjoy things when he is not with me. Life with him is much more better than before.
At the beginning, I had doubts and was afraid I might not to be able to make him become a well-behaved dog. When he came to me, he was scared about everything, even other dogs. Going on the street was impossible, for example. Now, even if he remains very sensitive and hates loud noises, he seems to be well.
Balto is very smart. He learns very quickly, but not always things I want him to learn. That's the hidden side of smart dogs, haha. We have lot of fun learning tricks. He has about 50 now, and I must write them down because I forget them (but he does not, he forgets nothing). He has a very, very strong desire to please. We started dog dancing a few months ago and I have to invent our choregraphy. We also have fun with agility on our home-made obstacles on the schoolyard.
Balto loves the ball (it is more than love, it is an obsession). To control this obsession, we work on what I call "ball approaches." He is now very good at that. And I wonder how he would do with sheep. Maybe one day, if we have the opportunity, we will try it.
I don't know what to say, I could write more. I could write a whole novel about my beloved dog.
A few videos from him here, it is better than a long text.
