Barley is a five-year-old rescue originally from my home state of Arkansas. He came to the shelter after being abandoned at a property with another dog. The shelter he was at was where I had formerly volunteered, and after my mother met with him initially for me, I called them right away to ask for him to be placed on hold. I met Barley (formerly named Winn Dixie) two days later and adopted him after a few hours of getting to know him. My wonderful shelter manager waived my adoption fee, despite my insistence that I pay.
Barley now lives in KCMO in a college dorm with myself and three other girls. I suffer from general anxiety disorder and major depressive disorder. Together, these two illnesses make it very difficult for me to want to do much of anything. Barley has become my golden boy, living up to his title of Emotional Support Animal. He rarely makes a sound louder than a soft, playful growling. He hasn't met a stranger; every person and animal he meets he wants to befriend. He's playful, goofy, and honestly my best friend. I could not have asked for a better dog if I'd gotten to pick out all of its traits in a lab. Barley is a true diamond in the ruff.
