This is Don Canelo. When we got him from the pound, he was a sad guy. His owner had died and the family could not keep him. We joke that he ispart Black Bear, in with his other breeds. Since he was an older dog he was being looked over, but my husband and I knew he was something special! Boy, were we ever right!
Poor Canelo spent about a year looking for his owner. When we would go for walks he would pull whenever he saw a middle-aged man in a sweatshirt smoking a cigarette. Needless to say, during the first year with Canelo, I met every cigarette-smoking, middle-aged, sweatshirt-wearing man within a five-mile radius of our house. I could tell that he really loved his old owner. Slowly as time went by Canelo grew to accept that his special person was gone and he started to become a more cheerful dog and more affectionate.
Canelo loves every person he comes across, and they like him too. I have learned a lot from his ability to not judge a book by it's cover. Once we were going by a bus stop and a homeless person was sitting alone, and Canelo decided to say "hi" and gave the lady a little kiss. She was so happy to be greeted this way! Another time we were out and came across a group of teenagers and while I was tempted to cross the street, Canelo decided otherwise. These tough looking kids just MELTED at the love coming from this dog. On our walks we have met Mormons, highway construction workers, street vendors, grandmothers, business people, police officers, and on and on.
When we are not out on walks, hikes, or going for car rides, Don Canelo also enjoys napping and sleeping. His friend Koda (the red dog) is particular about food, but Canelo is philosophical and will eat pretty much what is set in front of him. He doesn't take food for granted. He will try to eat the kibble that his friend leaves behind, so we have to monitor him so he doesn't get too chubby. He also loves belly rubs and kisses. He has a nice smell of clean dirt and freshly mown grass.
