Jasper is a five-year-old toy poodle, 6.25 pounds, and is faded red in color. Like most poodles, Jasper has his trick-or-treat mode, his high speed mode, and his couch mode, as evidenced in the pictures. Jasper is our third poodle, preceded by the sainted Rufus, a miniature who lasted 17 years, and the elegant Chauncey, a show quality black toy. When we first saw Jasper, he looked like a tiny red sheep: he was 16 weeks old and had never had a haircut, except for his snout, which was freshly trimmed. He was the right dog and came home with us.
Every year Jasper goes with us to Poodle Day in Carmel, California to join 500 other poodles and their owners in a day of festivities. He gets to strut his stuff in front of a crowd, sniff the nether regions of his fellow poodles, go to a cocktail party and go out to dinner in one of dog-friendly Camel's nice restaurants.
Jasper knows he is boss of the household. When he goes on a walk, it's his walk; he tells us where he wants to sniff and where he wants to go. Trying to get him to go further than he wants to results in six pounds of poodle braced against the pavement, resisting with all his strength the pull of the leash, saying as clearly as if he had spoken the words, "I'm not going there, don't try to make me."
Jasper has trained us to do his bidding, gives good lap to both of us, and sees us as part of the pack. He is truly the family dog.
