This is our girl, Shadow. We adopted her from the Hancock County Animal Shelter in February, about a month after we lost our 12-year-old yellow lab mix, Abby . Abby was my heart and soul, and although I will always have dogs in my life, I never dreamed that I could love another as much as I loved her.
Then along came Shadow. We always joked that since Abby was a new yellow dog when she found us, our next dog would be a used black dog. Black dogs have an unfair stigma attached to them, and they are sometimes harder to place because of it. We wanted to make it right for at least one big black dog, so when Abby passed away, we kept out eye out for the right one.
I saw Shadow's picture on the shelter website (the bottom picture here), and fell in love with her sad little face. She seemed to say, "Why doesn't anyone want me?" Well, we wanted her. My husband and I visited her a couple of times. She was kind of aloof. She showed no aggression or anything, just no real interest. We had a feeling that it was just because of the setting and wanted to take her home.
The shelter workers loved Shadow and wanted to be sure to place her in the right home. The director of the shelter happened to be Abby's trainer, and she remembered me. She said that our home would be perfect for Shadow. She was right. Once Shadow got out of the shelter and realized that our home was her home, she came out of her shell. She is the most loving, sweet dog. Turns out she wasn't "aloof" - she's a GOOF.
She spends her day lounging on the couch with her favorite toys, looking out the window and playing with her sister cat, Kayla. She still has a ways to go with her walking skills, but we've got a lifetime to work on that. I know that she's going to be the perfect exercise partner with a little patience and a lot of practice.
We still miss my Abby Dog, and we often tell Shadow that Abby would have *never* done whatever silly thing Shadow has decided to do (like taking the frying pan off of the stove, or getting all muddy in the back yard) but we love Shadow very much. We can't imagine our home without our goofy girl.
