When our eyes met at the Los Alamos Animal Shelter, a shy young stray and I agreed to team up. He had been picked up in Bandelier National Park, living on his own in the wilderness, appearing to be a sort of husky/cattle dog mix. The Vet thought he was about a year old at the time, and is now five. My husband and I had given our previous animal companions "people" names like Fred and Shirley and Vincent, but "Wolfie" seemed the right name for this guy!
He quickly caught on to civilized life, needed little house-training, but still remains wary of strangers and very protective of our home and family. Wolfie possesses every wonderful doggy trait: loyal and affectionate, he stays nearby, never lunges at the door, follows us around, and doesn't even demand to rise early in the morning! Being a good "watch dog" came naturally to him and he guards our house diligently. Too diligently, perhaps, as the UPS man is scared of him and tosses the packages out of the truck!
Living in the country outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico, provides plenty of entertainment for a happy dog-life: hunting lizards, mice, birds and snakes is Wolfie's favorite pastime.
I am a painter, working in pastel, doing mostly landscape, but I often feel inspired to use Wolfie as a subject.
