After Hurricane Katrina, the Atlanta Humane Society was taking in dogs whose owners could get to Georgia but could not keep their dogs in their temporary locations. The AHS then fostered the dogs. Pepper, we were told, had been strictly a yard dog - never a house dog. He happily jumped into the tailgate of my SUV but was in the passenger seat before I could get into the driver's seat. Upon arriving home, with trepidation I let him in the house. He made a racing circle of the first floor then bounded up the steps. By the time I got upstairs, he was snuggled down on the bed. Yard dog, right! Guess no one ever told him that part!
Our vet, upon hearing Pepper's story, asked if he was a good addition to the family and he has been a wonderful one. He is sweet, loyal and in his younger years was an excellent running companion. As he is a Border Collie mix, since we can not provide him with a herd of sheep, he and I used to go running together to help use up some of his excess energy. After six months of fostering him, his owners released him and we were able to adopt him officially. We ached for his original owners and hope the AHS assured them that he is healthy, happy and much loved. He is intelligent, funny, very active and agreeable to everything - just so he is part of it.
