I adopted my first dog, Shadow, seven years ago as a spunky young pup. Little did I know what I was in for. The first years were hard, at times I became frustrated because he wasn't the loyal "Lassiel" dog I had hoped for, but rather would go off crashing through the woods and leave me behind at the glimpse of a deer. He became adept at scaling fences and would do so daily. He once jumped out of a 15-foot treehouse and then scaled a seven-foot fence at 2 am, all in the hopes of tracking down an animal.
As the dedicated time spent with him began to pay off, I remember the first time he learned a difficult agility movement or the first time he listened to me instead of the squirrel that was running across his path. Perseverance and patience (along with much exercise!) have developed a very deep bond with my pup. This bond is difficult to put into words, however, those that have been through it know the unending loyalty of Lassie is only a fantasy, while the deep love between human and dog comes from a determination to fight for complete trust.
