Little Grayson came to us a year and a half ago, in 2018, shortly after we lost another little poodle suddenly to encephalitis. It was such a sad time for us. I found Grayson on Petfinder and I'm not 100% sure why I applied for him. We had always had poodles and he didn't look very poodley! But they listed him as a poodle mix, and his story was a sad one. I wanted to rescue him. He'd been found by the side of the road in Virginia by a kind lady who was driving by and saw movement in the grass. He was a matted mess! She took him right to a shelter where they cleaned him up. They couldn't tell the front from the back! They waited a number of days for someone to claim him and then put his pictures and story up on Petfinder.
When we were approved for his adoption, he was transported from Virginia to NJ (near us in Philadelphia) by an angel who regularly uses his van to transport dogs to rescue groups or forever homes. It was Thanksgiving weekend. My husband went to get him as I was working in a shop on a busy Friday. He came back to the shop with Grayson in his arms. Small and scared, and shaved bare from his grooming. We hadn't a clue what he'd end up looking like when his hair grew back!
Well, he is a SOFT, fluffy, scruffy cutie pie! No poodle curls. But we had his DNA done and he IS 75% poodle (25% hound!) His legs are short and we thought he perhaps had dachshund in him. When I tell you that he has turned out to be the best dog ever, I am not kidding! He came to us completely house trained. He is sweet as can be, and wouldn't hurt a fly. He is a consummate lap dog.
He's definitely got some quirks! He hates wearing a harness for his walks. In fact, it stresses him out so much, he often runs from us when we want to go for a walk. He does have a nice fenced back yard that he loves to explore. But he hates flies. Terrified of them. We think he may have had a run-in with bees at some point.
Oh ... and, as his vet observed, he has the bark of a 60-pound dog! We adore him!
