I am a "dog person" who married a "cat person" and we live across the street from a dog park in Philadelphia. I plotted to get a dog since the beginning of our marriage. Obviously, with all the dog action going on across the street, any chance I could get, I extolled the virtues of dogs and made sure to point out every adorable creature we came across. My husband was unmoved.
Finally when I turned 50, he weakened. "I don't want a dog, I don't need a dog, but if you really want a dog, I can't stop you." I didn't waste a minute. My husband was off on a fishing trip when my mother and I found Stella, a four-pound(1.8 kg) Havanese. I was still working full time but my husband was semi-retired and he spent the majority of the early years with Stella. It was comical to see the less than ten-pound (4.5 kg) dog following around the six-foot-tall man.
Fast forward five years and Stella is, as my husband likes to say, the 'Best Dog in the World.' She is not only beautiful, but as smart as can be. On a good day she will bring me my slippers, bring me the mail, play dead, give out lots of kisses and most importantly, protect us from that mystery man who inserts the mail into our house each afternoon. She wakes me each morning with a gentle 'puff' in my ear but, if I am being particularly lazy, she will incrementally turn up the 'puff' to the volume of a genuine bark.
Stella spends most mornings lounging on the couch, moving with the sun to catch the best rays. She spends her afternoon sitting on the window sill watching the outdoor action and guarding the front door. She loves all kids and adults but, she is not so fond of the mailman and UPS guy. Stella's guard-dog performance is such that when the door is opened the visitor is always astonished to see our cute, sweet, thirteen-pound(5.8 kg) lady. Stella is the love of our life and my previous cat-husband is now a dog lover. I have to remind him, when we are out with friends, that people have probably heard enough already about our amazing Stella!
